I wrote this song in 2015, after my wife Karen — mother of our 4 children and grandmother to our grandkids — had died 9 years prior, in 2006. This song was based on my personal, heartfelt reflections of my wife: my deep abiding love, treasured memories, and the enduring bond that remained with me all the while, and that were at times so real and vivid in my thoughts and my dreams, flowing from my heart and mind.
It was also written for all those who have lost their dear loved ones, and whose memories of them are so vivid sometimes that they seem as if their presence is real. I sing and play my guitar on this recorded and produced version of "It's Been Awhile," and hope it speaks meaningfully to anyone who has grieved the passing of a beloved spouse or loved one. Through tender lyrics and quiet remembrance, this song captures the feeling of carrying someone in your heart long after they are gone, where memories still feel alive, comforting, and deeply real.
This song is rooted in hope. For those who trust in Christ, grief is not without promise. As the Bible reminds us, "We believe that God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Christ." Even in seasons of sorrow — as with my loss of my sweet and faithful wife, Karen — faith always points toward comfort, promise, healing, and everlasting reunion and love, long beyond this temporary, passing earthly life.
